Hawaii is talking about banning sunscreen that’s harmful to coral and I think that’s very environmentally sexy of them

No ones gonna say a thing about me calling environmentalism sexy huh

Good commentary, A+ should be used more often.

Also screw oxybenzone

Hurray for skin cancer I guess :/

“Sunscreen that is bad for coral” == “all sunscreen”

I’d rather die than kill the environment, any day.

That’s very environmentally sexy of you

Basically, you just should not use sunscreen that contains oxybenzone if you are going to swim in the ocean, hang out near the ocean, etc.

Instead you should use mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide) or biodegradable sunscreen. Mineral-based sunscreen is generally better for you, too.

That said, the Hawaii ban died because of lobbying by sunscreen manufacturers. Because of course it did.

Of course. Because money and profit is sooo much more important.

I looked up the ingredients to the pretty much only sunscreen we can use, was really glad that it’s one of the zinc oxide ones. So if anyone wants a recommendation, Vanicream works very well and has not irritated the skin of anyone in my family. But just to be safe you might want to check the ingredients for yourself, since not everyone has the same skin irritations?

Their lotion is pretty good, too. Though I just use the lite version, since it’s not thick enough to make me hate putting it on my hands. I guess it’s a sensory issue?

I’ve honestly never heard of anyone reacting to mineral-based sunscreen. I suppose it’s possible, but zinc is an essential mineral anyway, so anyone who reacts to it is likely to have other health problems.

Celtic complexion makes a great sunscreen. It uses zinc, and is formulated for very fair skin, so it’s going to give you full coverage no matter your skin tone or type. It’s very gentle and stays on well when I go swimming or diving.

Here’s the link, and she explains all the ingredients, too. : http://www.celticcomplexion.com/sun-protection/organic-sunscreen-for-sensitive-skin-spf-32/

hey so scuba diver here

ZINC OXIDE IS NOT REEF SAFE – PLEASE DON’T USE IT

the key words you want to look for ARE NOT “organic” or “natural” etc – these things can still be damaging to marine environments! Instead look for “reef safe” or “coral safe” sunscreen, but check to see if they have the research to back them up (if they’re legit they will have this)!

Stream2Sea is my personal favorite – works well and is reasonably priced
