what the band’s visit sweeping means

katrinaslenk:

ok i’m just at a loss for words right now, you have no fucking idea how much this show means to me but here’s some amazing things that i’ve picked up through hours of obsessing over this show

  • the band’s visit is the 1st middle eastern work to win a tony. ever.
  • the band’s visit is also technically the 1st asian show that wasn’t racist to asians (cough king and i cough miss saigon)
  • they cast actual middle easterners in this show!! can broadway and all theatre stop casting non middle easterners in middle eastern shows (cough aladdin)
  • 5 of the people from the team were the 1st asians to win in their categories. i mean in the year 2018???? come on!!!!
  • this is prob one of the few shows i’ve seen that have featured jewish/muslim people in a narrative that has nothing to do with their religion. they’re just a group of guys who got lost on a bus i mean lmao??!?!
  • the show is 50% in hebrew and arabic and they just don’t translate it at all i mean iconic
  • the fact that in everyone’s speeches they talked about racism, immigration, islamophobia, and antisemitism like they will not let any member of that audience forget what’s happening right now!!!
  • there’s prob more but i am just speechless and shaking and i love this show and everything it’s done for theatre and for people of color good fucking night
