Mermaids can always be seen on the surface, but they have preferences: 

• Euphotic mermaids live near sunlight, so they appear during the day. 
• Dysphotic mermaids are far form sunlight, splashing during evenings. 
• Aphotic mermaids live in the deep sea, spotted mostly at night.
