anyone else upset that they’re trying to give robots ugly, uncanny valley human faces instead of daft punk heads or tv heads
When trying to make an expressive robot head, this:
or this:
Looks good.
This:
is also perfectly acceptable.
However this:
is the stuff of nightmares.
You’re never going to make it look human, stop trying. Make it look obviously inhuman in a way that looks good instead of diving further and further into the crevasse of Things That Should Not Be.
same thing with prosthetics TBH, this shit looks simply bad and pitiful
This however looks cool and enhanced, I think way fewer people would look at this with pity
I once spoke to a girl with a prosthetic who was pretty excited about the new possibilities, she said people always see her as a broken human, as someone who is not complete, while she sees herself as a fully functional cyborg, and I found it quiet powerful.
Yeah, I recall the tale of a pair of servicemen, a man and woman who lost opposite arms. They gave them these very functional prototype prosthetics that use peroxide steam to work, but the artificial skin was hideous. They both independently stopped putting the skin on the arm and were happy to just glue pads to the fingers to grip with and walk around with a Terminator looking skeletal metal arm.
Gosh damn, that leg is absolutely gorgeous!
The key to good prosthetics is to embrace that they aren’t a real arm/leg but still perfectly good and useful instead of trying to make it a cheap imitation of a human limb.
For anyone not so familiar with cat behavior, this cat is out of its mind excited to do this. It’s much more rare for cars to wag their tails but it means the same as it does when a dog does it. This cat is curious and proud and playing. It keeps looking at its owner too, like “LOOK AT ME, DAD” and it’s so rare to get videos of cats this happy. This is fucking rad
Nope.. wagging tails means anger or irritation in cat body language.
hey y’all, hope you don’t mind me stepping in!
you’re both right 🙂 a wagging tail means the cat is highly stimulated (think coiled spring, ready to go off). depending on the situation, this can be interpreted differently – just like people can smile nervously at job interviews vs. happily grin at friends.
in most cases, it’s safe to interpret overstimulation as ‘you’re doing something to amp up the cat & it wants you to stop’ (ex. unwanted petting). it should be seen as a warning; all that pent-up energy COULD be released as a swat or bite.
BUT in this case, that tail-wagging ‘frustration’ is the stimulation that comes from problem-solving (where can I jump? is it safe to go here?) and the excitement of play. it’s good to be wary of ‘cute’ animals vids, but this seems like an unproblematic video!
I’d like to add to this–just look at world-famous box-loving cat, Maru, who wags his tail every time he stuffs his body into a box or other small object. He’s clearly not about to attack the person behind the camera! It’s definitely based on stimulation, but more to the point of “ahhh FINALLY I’ve gotten into the small space, now how do I get the rest of me inside”:
uhhhh no offense but think about what you say to kids because like… when I was a kid all I heard was my friends saying “no one wants to hear you sing shut up” until fifth grade I was singing under my breath “we will rock you” by KISS because I had one of those toothtunes toothbrushes that played it and my teacher stopped me and was like… do that again. And I thought I was in trouble because no one wanted to hear me sing so I didn’t at first but she kinda coaxed me into it and once I sang it she was like “that’s good! That’s actually really good, sorry, I’m a little surprised! Wow!” And it literally changed my whole life I immediately ran off to try and join the talent show (I was too late) and I did honor choir and joined choir in 6th grade and here I am now, doing a bachelors in music education with an emphasis in voice, and looking at doing my masters in musical theater performance. I owe literally everything to the fact that my 5th grade math/homeroom teacher stopped me and made me sing a little for her and took that time to tell me that I was good at it. That was a 2 minute interaction that I doubt she even remembers but it literally changed my entire life.
tl;dr: the things you say can have the most profound effect on a kids life. Think about what you’re saying the next time you tell a kid something. You never know if that 30 second interaction is going to affect their life forever, so why not make it a good one, huh?
