I received a few well-meaning messages these past couple days in regards to all the work I’m doing.  By work I mean lots of sewing and quilting.

Yes, it’s stressing my wrist.  I have a special brace I wear overnight that’s just shy of being a cast.  In the morning my wrist is happy and allows me to work all day.

I’m not actually working all day.  I’m up at around 6am because the sun fills the bedroom by 7am and there’s no sleeping through that.  Most especially because it gets too warm in there due to the bedroom being on the east side of the house.  After breakfast and a shower I need to be doing something, I need to feel productive.  Housecleaning takes less than a hour because I do it daily.

Being disabled means I can’t work a “real” job.  I receive $720/month, all of which is eaten up within 24 hours by our bills.  My husband is the only one who can work, but he’s not getting paid enough (who the fuck is?) so I do my best to make money.  I create things and sell them.  Or at least list them on Etsy and HOPE they sell.

I stop working under any of the following circumstances:

  • Not feeling “right”, which is usually what happens a few hours before a seizure.
  • Sunset has arrived.  Yup, I stop working at sunset.
  • My sewing room is too warm.  It’s on the west end of the house, we live in a desert, it gets REALLY hot in there from May-September.  By 4pm I’m done.  It’s why I start at about 9am.
  • I feel a burnout coming on.
  • My wrist is being a bitch.

Currently I’m grieving.  Sitting idle just makes it so much harder for me to grieve.  Creating things isn’t distracting, it’s cathartic.  My grandfather LOVED quilts.  My grandmother is a quilter, he 100% supported her, adored her work, and encouraged her.  He was thrilled when he learned I’d taken up the family tradition.  I create because it makes me happy, I know it made/makes him happy, and it helps me through this emotional mess I’m dealing with.

Not only am I grieving but am also poor, as you may have guessed.  I create because it brings me joy and satisfaction, but also as a means of extra income.  I’ve made $160.50 thus far this year.  It’s not enough, so I make more and hope someone purchases the work.  My financial situation isn’t helping with my grieving and has me extremely stressed.  I need to stay occupied.

I appreciate your concerns.  I ice my wrist when it swells or hurts too much, I take an NSAID (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug) before going to bed so the swelling and pain diminish overnight, and I don’t rush my work.  Thank you for your comments, but know that I’m well aware of what I’m doing as well as my limits.

If you really want to help you can purchase my work: https://www.etsy.com/shop/naynaymacrame

Simply because it’s relevant.

honey is the only food product that never spoils. there are pots of honey that are over five thousand years old and still completely edible

i also want to point out we know it tastes the same even after thousands of years b/c archaeologists who discovered two thousand year old honey tasted it. presumably right after they looked at each other and went “what the hell here goes nothing”

I’m pretty sure they also identify human remains by taste. Archaeologists are straight up freaks.

No, no no… you identify bone from rock or other substances by touching it to your tongue. If it sticks, it’s bone. The taste itself has nothing to do with it. And most archaeologists won’t lick human bones if they know they’re human.

…and I realize that doesn’t actually do much to prove archaeologists aren’t freaks.

mai nam is jane
and wen i dig
i fynde some roks
both smol and big
i put my tung
upon the stone
for science yes
i lik the bone

I’m sitting with a bunch of archaeologists and we just laughed so hard we CRIED we’re getting tshirts with this on them

this is beautiful

i’ll never understand why we don’t call countries the names they actually call themselves

like, i know this is a weeaboo-sounding example, but let’s start with Japan. They call themselves Nippon or Nihon depending on… i guess, the speaker’s accent??? or their level of formality while speaking??? I dunno. But we still called them Zipangu for like a few hundred years. And now we call them Japan.

All because Marco Polo asked someone in China about that island over there and they said “oh that’s Cipangu” and Marco Polo was like “Oh, Zipangu, cool.” And then he went back to Italy and said “Y’ALL THERE’S THIS DOPE-ASS ISLAND CALLED ZIPANGU” and people back in Italy were like “An island called Giappone? Dope.”

And this pattern of people mishearing people kept repeating until we got to “Japan.”

And we still call them Japan even though we know better. Because fuck you, Marco Polo asked the wrong person 500 years ago and misheard them and we’re sticking to that, I guess.

that was literally just the world’s worst game of telephone

This terrifying eel-robot will perform maintenance on undersea equipment

Nope.

sweet

who are you calling terrifying this is clearly a friend of the highest quality

all yall with ur “uwu smol friend” bullshit gonna let us walk right into the fucking robot apocalypse someone could make a metal gear in real life and youd all say its adorable

this is exactly the kind of shit im talking about when i say i have no patience for people who look at robots and immediately start thinking about terminator shit. why is this terrifying? because it looks like a snake? so the fuck what? the reason robots are made to look like existing organisms is because those organisms have a several million year head start on robotics engineers on solving problems like how to move in water while expending minimal energy or how to walk over uneven terrain while carrying a heavy load.

it’s also really telling that people are much more scared of these organic robots that fall into the uncanny valley than they are of drones, which are robots that currently exist and have been killing people for several years. if a “robot apocalypse” does end up happening, it wont be due to organic-looking robots suddenly achieving sentience and deciding to wipe out all life on earth, it’ll be because some rich asshole or a war-hungry country sees new technology with the potential to kill people and harnesses it for that purpose, which has already happened several times over the course of human history.

tl;dr: stop opposing technological advancements with massive potential for good because you watched Terminator once, also this snake is cute and a friend

i was joking but honestly? this is a Hot Take

TIL that due to their small brains koalas are unable to perform complex, unfamiliar tasks such as eat leaves off of flat surfaces.

via reddit.com

how are they even alive

eucalyptus trees are full of flammable oil that causes the trees to explode during forest fires, killing other trees and spreading its seeds to grow in their place. koalas survive solely because nothing else in their environment Wants To Eat The Fucking Bombs
