If you’re European, in a couple of weeks you will be denied any and all access to fandom contents on Tumblr and everywhere else on the internet. Here’s why.
On June, 20th the JURI of European Parliament approved of the articles 11 and 13 of the new Copyright Law. These articles are also known as the “Link Tax” and the “Censorship Machines” articles.
Articles 13 in particular forces every internet platform to filter all the contents we upload online, ending once and for all the fandom culture. Which means you won’t be able to upload any type of fandom works like fan arts, fan fictions, gif sets from your favourite films and series, edits, because it’s all copyrighted material. And you won’t also be able to share, enjoy or download other’s contents, because the use of links will be completely restricted.
But not everything’s lost yet. There’s another round of voting scheduled for the early days of July.
What you can do now to save our internet, is to share these informations with all of your family members and friends, and to ask to your MEP (the members of the European Parliament from your country) to vote NO at the next round, to vote against articles 11 and 13.
Here you can find more news and all the details to contact your MEP:
We have just a couple of weeks to stop this complete madness, don’t let them dictating the way we enjoy our internet.
#SaveYourInternet now!
It’s funny how y’all will reblog any and all US things but when whole Europe might lose access to internet then everything is quiet.
friendly reminder that if this goes through my blog may well be fucked so please please sign!!!
WHY DID I NOT KNOW THIS?? EUROPEANS PAY ATTENTION!
Look I know I don’t have a whole lot of European followers, but please do signal boost this for those of us that will suffer under it
Plus for the record this is the first many of us have been hearing of it. Our press has been taken up with Trump and Brexit and ordinary national news. Not a word has been said about anything like this at all
To expand further on this, here is an additional article from the BBC which better explains the threat to content creators:
We have till around the 4th July to try and fix this.
I believe that this now proposed law is flawed when it comes to fanart and fan created works. Although it’s apparently trying to protect creative work and publication that are posted online, by making sure they aren’t posted elsewhere. Websites will be required to put in a system that flags anything that breaches copyright so this could include fanart as the artist will not have a license for the characters used in the artwork.
I can see both the good and the bad in this proposed law change.
On one hand, my original artwork will be more protected than ever ( on my illustration Instagram account) it on the other hand, I may no longer be able to post fanart. My small tributes to show my appreiecation for a series or character.. I and many others are most likely in the same situation.
This is why I urge you to contact your MEPs. Explain your concerns as this could affect us all.
Heres hoping it’s not as bad as it sounds if it does stay 😦
this fucking article 11 and article 13 stuff is fucking bullshit.
basically means that a bunch of people in the EU JURI thing voted for websites to start using copyright programs. so memes using gifs from tv shows would get banned and taken down. fanmade content would probably get taken down. people have to pay the creators to use gifs and quotes or else itll get taken down.
fuck this. i am over this. people do not have the authority to decide how to operate the internet.
ive seen hardly anything about this online, and i wish it would have the same ripple affect as net neutrality did.
if you want more info on this, either just google it or message me and ill divulge all i know (which isnt much and might be inaccurate. but its better than nothing)
