so i saw some people discussing how loki in ragnarok shouldn’t have been at all phased or subverted by dr. strange – which i agree with, but also, hey, it’s comedic and you can argue that he was taken off-guard, but upon re-watch, something stuck out to me –

there’s this moment when they appear at the bottom of the stairs and thor rolls down the last couple and stands up and he says

we could’ve just walked.

and it made me think of how magic works in terry pratchett’s novels, how (to paraphrase) the hard part wasn’t turning someone into a frog, it was not turning someone into a frog when you knew how easy it was.

like, the whole scene with dr. strange is just. all magic. all pointless magic. unnecessary magic, when, well. they could have just walked.

whereas loki doesn’t really rely on magic overmuch in the movie – he uses it as a tool, when he needs it, but if the job can be done with plain old non-magical trickery or a knife, he just uses those. he resorts to magic when he’s cornered by valkyrie, he uses it when his goals are most directly accomplished by using magic rather than by other means.

whereas dr. strange is using magic all over his scene, just to use it. just because he can. magic was unnecessary for ninety percent of what he did in that scene, the only time he needed magic was to whisk them away to norway. but he teleported all over the place even when he only needed to move a few feet, gave thor an ever-refilling beer that just spilled everywhere, floated around to make a show of how ~magical~ he was, when…

he could have just walked.

i mean, i’m very sure that the filmmakers intended it for comedic effect, but there’s also a layer there of dr. strange being much less comfortable with magic than loki is – loki doesn’t need to bust out the magic at every opportunity, it’s simply a skill, a tool that is completely under his control and at his disposal. whereas dr. strange (at least in his scene in ragnarok) is showing off, which reeks of insecurity.

i guess i’m thinking… if you take the magic away, loki is still a deadly, formidable opponent with many tricks up his sleeve, but dr. strange is just a guy in a cape.

man. Remember the first time you watched Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Dir. Taika Waititi and hela asked thor ‘what were the god of again?’ and then it went to loki smirking and you KNEW something good was coming. And then immigrant song started to kick in and the LIGHTING started and you felt your SOUL leave your body and go to another plan of existance. Then Thor desending lighting and all onto that pile of aliens in slow motion looking goddamn RENAISSANCE painting? That moment changed me! the DRAMA! The rest of that scene? Valkyrie, Loki, and Hulk fighting together? Thor’s LIGHTING striking those aliens straight outta there like they were fucking ants? ICONIC! The iconic truly JUMPED out of that movie! Taika Waititi took my hand in that movie, told me it was all gonna be ok and then changed my life FOREVER! That was ART! Mr. Waititi thank you for my LIFE

“describe thor and loki’s dynamic with a single gif”

#i love how thor doesn’t even really try to stop loki’s murder knives it’s just a weary hand like ‘oh dear #‘don’t’ #‘can we not do this today’ #‘this has been my entire life do you see’ #‘[softly] loki no’ #this really is the dynamic (via @et-in-arkadia)

It’s like jazz hands but murder

i can’t believe that photo of hemsworth hiddleston and taika waititi all taking a nap together that’s so cursed and blessed at the same time

i’m the fact that the person taking the photo had to use a panoramic shot to get all of tom in the photo

the FACT that mark ruffalo is the one who took this and then posted it on facebooks like the nerdy dad he is

I just noticed Taika Waititi is snuggling Chris Hemsworth’s legs. This is the most precious image in existence.

This is what non-toxic masculinity looks like.

This is the world warriormale wants, and I’m A-OK with that. Fight when needed, but never fear the embrace of your brother.

Tessa Thompson behind the scenes of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

I didn’t notice this while watching the film but: they gave her heels? WTF? Who thinks that any warrior of any race or gender in their right mind would want to do that?

You weren’t meant to notice those in the film. Those are not “her armor has heels”

Those are stage lifts designed to make the actor look taller/the correct height for the character. You’ll see them a lot in behind the scenes clips – and not just on women either (in fact, RDJ wears them all the time to make him the right height relative to Chris Evans, ‘cause RDJ is short. Tom Cruise also wears lifts in a lot of his movies, because the guy is TINY). Tessa Thompson is only 5′4. She needs that extra height to look convincing as Valkyrie.

Remember when they had to build a ramp so Natalie Portman wouldn’t look weird kissing Chris Hemsworth XD;; I laughed, and yet, I’m only about 7cm taller than her so it was kinda an ugly laugh

Check out those extreme platform boots on Haldir (Craig Parker) from Lord of the Rings 🙂

Look if we’re gonna point out anyone’s high heels lets not forget the best one

Loki: Transforms smooth af

Thor: BLAM-O LIGHTNING EVERYWHERE YOU HEARD

poetic cinema

Surprised loki didnt flinch at all with all that lightning coursing around him

he grew up with that guy, he’s used to it

Loki didn’t even transform, his suit was an illusion and he just took it off.

Yeah, Loki just dispelled the illusion, but Thor actually had to change clothes, so he needed the lightning blast to cover the ThunderPenis.

I’m convinced Loki is perma-nude and EVERY outfit you see is an illusion. Why deal with the discomfort of chafing pleather pants when you can just trick people into thinking you’re wearing clothes?

Also, “ThunderPenis” nearly killed me.

A teenage boy sitting behind me when I first saw this movie narrated the transformation with “BAM! Now we sexy!” and I hear it in my head every. single. time.

“Bam! Now we sexy” is my new headcanon for this scene. 😂

BAM! Now we sexy!
