Did you know chickens often have claws on their wings? They really are little dinosaurs 😁
The part I’ve highlighted in red pokes out of their thumb as a nail. It can be found on their wrist where their wing bends, not right on the end of their hand. Here are some pictures that @poule-malchanceuse helped me get:
Jack, sumatra cock. Sumatras are a more “primitive” breed of chickens that have been breed from wild jungle fowl more recently. Jack’s nail is the biggest one so far.
Millet, Old English game cockerel. Small but there, easy to mistake for a pin feather coming in.
We’ve observed that pullets and hens have a smaller nail than cockerels and cocks. I think it may also be breed dependent. If my fellow chicken keepers could reblog this with a picture (or your observations if you can’t get one) with the breed and sex of your chicken that would be great to help us learn more about this cool, little known feature of chooks.
